The reservist students need help  Fulfill their true calling.

Tel Aviv University has launched the Uniform to University Campaign to make it financially possible for these young heroes to continue their studies and receive both academic and crucially needed mental health support.

« Out of a tremendous sense of duty, these brave young people put their dreams on hold and their lives in danger in defense of Israel – and now we are equally duty-bound to ensure they get all the academic and financial assistance they need to save this school year »

said Prof. Ariel Porat, President of Tel Aviv University (TAU)

“Students are facing significant financial hardship. Assistance with tuition, living expenses and dorm fees will greatly aid them »

added Danielle Zilber, who chairs Tel Aviv University ’s Student Union.

Carmel, 26, is a student in the BA Excellence Track in Acting, at TAU’s Theater Arts Department. She is a captain in the National Aid Battalion of the Homefront Command, which responds to citizens affected by war :

“These are tough times for usand we try to help as much as we can.”

She says that she hopes to return to studies soon, and with a little help she will be able to pursue her dream of becoming an actress and “making people smile.”

Strength in Diversity: 1 Out of Every 3 Reservists on Campus is a Woman

Since October 7th, hundreds of thousands of citizens, including students, have answered the call for military duty, setting aside all personal responsibilities to protect civilians from the attacks of Hamas. According to new data concerning the initial months of the war, 6,657 students from TAU were called up for reserve duty, and among them, 2,228 were women (34%).

As of January 24th, after most reservists have been discharged, 2,545 students from Tel Aviv University are still serving in the military reserve duty, with 755 of them being women (29%).

How can we help reservists?

At Tel Aviv University around 20% of all students, were called up for reserve following the October 7th massacre. This makes over 6000 students.

Those brave young men and women put their lives on hold and in danger, and instead of pursuing their dream of becoming the next doctor, engineer or lawyer they left everything behind to protect the country, protect our nation.

We must – with academic and financial assistance – guarantee their educational futures and careers.

Therefor the Tel Aviv University has put up a scholarship fund to support those reservist and ensure they can continue to study and pursue their dream despite being taken out of their day to day reality and student life.

This fund serves for tuitions, academic tutoring, mental health and in cases where there is a need also living expenses.

Scholarships for students who served as IDF reservists in Operation Iron Swords, with many remaining on the frontlines in Gaza and the north, in combat, for several months straight. Lone soldiers are particularly vulnerable. Allocations will be given of up to NIS 9,000 ($2,500) per student, depending on their type of military service and financial need.

Personalized academic tutoring for returning soldiers who have missed important study material and who need help to complete courses, succeed in tests, and save the semester. Allocations vary but can reach $1,500 per student for the academic year.

How do students experience their return to studies ? Are there many?

Most of our reservists students have at least partially come back to their studies.

Their return is very challenging, both academically speaking as well as mentally and for some even physically.

They have lived in a different reality throughout the past six months and the transition back to university is not an easy one.

What helps them is the fact that the university supports them with a full scholarship and if needed with further financial support for their living expenses.

Academically speaking a large number of faculty members volunteered to give after class tutoring in small groups for returning students, as well as every fourth week a week to close the academic gaps missed throughout the semester.

How do they cope with the grief of students who died in combat?

When walking through Tel Aviv University Campus you will unfortunately find numerous corners remembering our fallen heroes. On campus just as everywhere else in Israeli society grief and the memory of the precious souls lost in this war are omnipresent.

Do you also need foreign volunteers (Swiss for example) specialists in PTSD for their psychological support?

A project which was planned already for quite a while, found a momentum due to the urgency of the October 7th atrocities. Tel Aviv University has opened the first national PTSD center in the country. A project which was planned already for quite a while, found a momentum due to the urgency of the October 7th atrocities.

The clinic is already functioning and treating students, civilians and IDF personell affected by this war.
